- Analysis
- WKU is coming off its most complete game of the season, recording 464 yards of total offense in a 34-13 win against Missouri State. Brock Glenn passed for 231 yards and added 95 yards and a touchdown on the ground, accounting for 326 yards of total offense himself. Ajay Allen added another 105 yards on the ground on the way to two touchdowns.
WKU has a legitimate second option offensively, which will be key against Sam Houston. The Bearkats have allowed only 139 yards through the air this season, but Glenn's ability to scramble and find holes should open up opportunities for the passing game. Allen should have room to work as well, which will help WKU attack what is actually a very average defense.
The Bearkat offense is what concerns me most about this game. Sam Houston is just 1-4 and were pounded 35-3 in their last outing against Liberty. They average 22.8 points per game, but one of those victories was a 59-0 win against Nicholls. Give WKU some leeway defensively, and it should be fine. Limit big plays and force the Bearkats to sustain long drives, and WKU will win.
Western Kentucky also owns the recent head to head, winning three straight games against Sam Houston. The Hilltoppers won 41-24 last season, and topped the Bearkats 31-14 the last time these two teams met in Huntsville. That certainly doesn't lock in a victory Wednesday, but Sam Houston has struggled against this offense in the past.
Expect Sam Houston to hang around at first, keeping things close with their defense. But Glenn's ability to make plays with his legs will make a difference, and I like WKU to pull away late.
