Analysis
After a 2-1 pitching duel in Game 1, the Dodgers and Brewers combined for 11 runs in Game 2 as Milwaukee takes a 2-0 lead to Los Angeles. There were four errors in Game 2 as both defenses have uncharacteristically struggled so far in this series and an uncaught foul ball that was not marked an error in the big third inning turned out to be a significant play leading to two runs and the early exit from Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Los Angeles has the potential to hit much better than it has in the first two games of the series, but Los Angeles scored only 14 runs in four games vs. the Braves and the off day resets an impressive Brewers bullpen that has completely shut down the late innings. Robert Gasser may not have the numbers or pedigree of the other starters in this series, but he had a 2.86 ERA since the All-Star Break, allowing only five home runs in 63 innings, including a quality start at Dodger Stadium. The Los Angeles lineup has been less effective vs. left-handed pitching as is the case for the Brewers, as this lefty-lefty pairing should support lower numbers. Blake Snell can get the Dodgers back in this series as Snell had a 1.90 ERA in nine regular season starts and owns a track record as one of the toughest pitchers in baseball when healthy with a historically great career 11.2 K/9. Snell has a strong postseason track record with a 3.23 ERA in over 86 innings of work, and he pitched eight scoreless innings with one hit allowed against the Brewers last season in the NLCS. The Los Angeles bullpen struggled to fill six innings in Game 2, but the maligned unit has the options to fill 3-4 innings, particularly back at home where the bullpen results have been stronger. Five of the past eight Dodger Stadium home playoff games have completed with seven or fewer runs going back to the NLDS last season even with two extra-inning games.
