In a funk off three consecutive losses, the Mariners will finally get it right and avoid being swept by the Blue Jays. Seattle has another tough three-game set at Boston on deck and manager Dan Wilson knows his troops need a little confidence before heading to Beantown.
Right-hander Logan Gilbert will pick up the pearl for the visitors. With five August starts in the books, No. 36 was tripped up for 10 earned runs and 22 hits in 29.2 innings of work. Logan whiffed 29 and walked 12 on his way to a 3-1 record with a solid 3.03 ERA. On the season, Gilbert has made 26 total starts and surrendered 58 earned runs and 120 hits in 155.1 frames. That's good enough for an 11-7 mark with a respectable 3.36 ERA.
Aging right-hander Max Scherzer will counter for the home team. Battling the Royals, Devil Rays, Red Sox, Phillies, and Cardinals in five August outings, No. 31 was slammed for 13 earned runs and 21 hits in 25.1 innings. Max struck out 18 and walked 11 on his way to an 0-3 record with a 4.62 ERA. Even worse, with 12 starts completed this year, Scherzer has allowed 39 earned runs and 52 hits in 50.0 frames. That's bad enough for a 1-7 tally with a stiff 7.02 ERA.
Technically, this is a lucrative spot for the visitors. Seattle has grabbed wins in 120 of its last 223 when priced as a favorite and 146 of its last 282 when competing with equal rest. On the other side of the diamond, Toronto has fallen in 51 of its last 98 when facing a right-handed starter, 36 of its last 66 when coming off a win, and 35 of its last 63 when priced as an underdog.
Resting 4.0-games back in the AL West and 4.0-games behind in their hunt for an AL Wild Card spot, the M's know they need to crank their game up a notch. Take Seattle with Gilbert. Thanks, and best of luck, Tom.
