Analysis
The surging Royals won 8-3 on Saturday, now on a stunning 12-1 run since August 16. While the offense has turned a corner and posted a few big numbers on the winning streak, Kansas City’s improved pitching is making the difference. The Royals have allowed three or fewer runs in eight of the past nine games. Seth Lugo has allowed three or fewer runs in six of his last nine starts. Lugo’s FIP is a respectable 4.00 and his career ERA vs. Cleveland is 3.90. Parker Messick has been one of the American League’s better starters this season with a 2.50 ERA. Messick has a 9.1 K/9 with low walk and home run rates as well and he has been on an incredible run of nine straight starts with two or fewer runs allowed. Messick is left-handed and the Royals have struggled vs. left-handed pitching all season with a 13-28 record vs. left-handed starters. Even on the current hot streak Kansas City is batting just .186 with 3.1 runs per nine vs. left-handers over the past five games. On the season these teams have averaged 7.5 runs per game over nine games as today’s total is right on that mean. Both bullpens are in great form right now with the Royals featuring a 1.72 ERA with a 0.77 WHIP in the past five games while Cleveland has a 3.74 ERA with a 0.92 WHIP. There were several scoring opportunities missed in last night’s game but there were a pair of two-run home runs and Cleveland scored three runs on just five hits. The Royals only had two of eight runs vs. left-handed starter Foster Griffin as an off outing from reliever Colin Holderman produced four runs with only one out acquired. There were also three errors in the game that contributed to the strain on the pitching staffs. Sunday’s matchup and conditions should be more suitable for lower-scoring at Progressive Field, and both squads still have solid ‘under’ leans for the season. Thank you for playing with Nelly’s and Best of Luck.
