- Analysis
- Matthew Liberatore has an adequate season line as the Cardinals continue to compete well as a surprise team in the NL Central race. Liberatore has a 4.76 ERA with an 8.4 K/9 but he has allowed 67 hits in just over 56 innings of work. Over his last three starts he owns a 6.75 ERA with 23 hits allowed in fewer than 15 innings of work. Liberatore has worse splits at home this season and the Cardinals have not had the same level of recent success that Chicago has enjoyed from its bullpen. In the past 10 games own a 1.89 bullpen ERA and with the long losing streak in the rearview mirror, Chicago is 3-1 in the past four games with 28 runs scored combined. The Cubs outhit St. Louis 11-9 in Friday’s one-run loss with the Cubs having an 11-7 edge in at-bats with runners in scoring position as well. St. Louis used seven pitchers to get through that game and then used five pitchers yesterday in a 6-1 win for the Cubs where Chicago had a 14-4 edge in at-bats with runners in scoring position. Jordan Wicks gets the Sunday night call for the Cubs on the mound, and it is just his second start of the season with a delayed 2026 campaign with forearm and elbow issues. Wicks lacks convincing career numbers over parts of four seasons, but he is a former 1st round pick, and the Cardinals have hit poorly against left-handed pitching this season, batting .232 with 3.6 runs per nine for the season while hitting .198 in the past 10 games. St. Louis is just 2-7 in the past nine games, and the Cardinals have failed to top two runs in six of those games as this is a team that may continue to slide backwards following a surprising start to the season. St. Louis is only a .500 team at home, and the Cubs are 37 runs superior in run differential at this point in the season despite only a half-game separating these teams in the standings. While neither left-handed starter warrants complete trust tonight, the bullpen for Chicago is in far better recent form and usage for Sunday night baseball.
Thank you for playing with Nelly’s and Best of Luck.
