Analysis

National League Total of the Week. My selection is on the 'over' between Philadelphia and Los Angeles at 4:10 pm et on Sunday. We saw a well-pitched, low-scoring affair between these two teams last night as the Phillies won by a score of 4-3. I expect more offense on Sunday as Philadelphia sends rookie Andrew Painter to the hill against Yoshinobu Yamamoto of the Dodgers. It's been an up-and-down rookie campaign so far for Painter. He has pitched reasonably well over his last three starts, allowing just five earned runs over 17 1/3 innings. With that being said, he's not missing many bats having racked up just 12 strikeouts in his last 21 innings. In fact, he got just 10 swinging strikes on 151 pitches over his last two outings. It's also worth noting that he'll be taking a step up in class here after facing the Red Sox, Reds and Guardians over his last three outings. The Dodgers were quiet at the plate last night but rank tops in baseball in xwOBA over the last week and are also best in baseball in wOBA against right-handed pitching this season. Yamamoto is coming off a couple of strong outings himself. Both of those starts came on the road. Interestingly, he's been a considerably better pitcher on the road than at home over the course of his career. He's just 7-7 with a 3.47 ERA and 1.12 WHIP in 27 career home starts but 16-7 with a 2.17 ERA and 0.95 WHIP in 31 road outings. Current Phillies hitters have gone 8-for-31 (.258) with a .762 OPS against the right-hander but none of them have faced him more than five times and six of the eight batters that have seen him have collected at least a hit, including everyone that has faced him more than three times. The Phillies have quietly been performing well at the dish lately, ranking seventh in the majors in xwOBA over the last week. Take the over (10*).
