- The first thing that jumps off the board when laying down the argument that the Golden State Valkyries should cover the spread Sunday against the Las Vegas Aces is the number and location of the game. Las Vegas is laying a small number here on the road, so Golden State doesn’t need much room to cover and cash. The Valkyries also are hosting this game at Chase Center where they have a record of 3-1 at home. Golden State comes into this matchup with the better record too at 5-2. Las Vegas sits at 4-3 and dropped its past game against the Dallas Wings.
The biggest advantage that Golden State holds over the Aces is defensively. The Valkyries have the WNBA’s best defensive rating at 99.8 and they notched 11 blocks in their victory over Indiana last time out. Defensive intensity will play a factor against a Las Vegas team that has struggled to find consistency early in the year and just lost a game in which it gave up a double-digit lead to Dallas 95-87.
Golden State enters this game with momentum on its side too after its victory over the Fever on Saturday night. Veronica Burton led the way with 25 points in the Valkyries’ 90-88 victory while Gabby Williams pitched in 19 points, six rebounds and six assists. The Warriors have balance enough to keep pace with the Aces, especially if their defense forces Vegas to earn everything they get on a possession-by-possession basis.
Las Vegas will have Aja Wilson, so there is no doubting this team’s ability to win this game, but Golden State’ defensive identity on its home floor along with its better overall play through the first half of the season makes me like the points here. If the Valkyries can limit Wilson dominance in the paint and force the Aces into tough jumper after tough jumper, Golden State has as good of a path to cover and win outright as any team.
