- Analysis
- I like the Tampa Bay Rays to cover the -1.5 run line Sunday against the LA Angels for two reasons. The market and matchup both suggest a bounce-back win is likely for Tampa Bay and betting the run line offers better value than the money line in this spot.
On the surface, Saturday’s 14-3 loss to Los Angeles could be seen as momentum-killing. But there’s actually a strong bounce-back angle to point to here. The Angels offense exploded early and then added seven runs in the ninth inning, but one-sided losses can work in Tampa Bay’s favor. They had been playing excellent baseball entering Sunday.
Friday’s opener was won 8-5 by the Rays, powered by a seven-run seventh inning. Tampa Bay still has a better overall team profile at home and should bounce back.
The Rays offense profiles as a group that can hit a ton of home runs, but also manufacture runs late to score two or more than what’s projected on the run line. Yandy Diaz homered yet again on Saturday following two homers on Friday. Junior Caminero added two doubles and an RBI on Saturday.
They have enough contact and power to scratch across runs, but also put late inning pressure on opposing bullpens to drive scores higher. If the Rays score early on Sunday and let the Angels bullpen protect traffic late, they have a strong chance to win by at least two runs.
Jim's Play: 918. Rays -1.5 runs
