Analysis
Chicago enters this matchup having won the first two games of this series, taking Friday’s contest 4-3 in 10 innings before Saturday’s 7-1 blowout victory. The White Sox have won five consecutive games as they improved to 31-27 on Sunday’s game against Detroit while the Tigers have continued their season-long woes by posting an abysmal 6-21 record in May. White Sox starting pitcher Sean Burke will take on Tigers starter Keider Montero in Sunday’s matcuh. Burke hasn’t had the strongest season, but he’s facing a Detroit offense that has lacked consistency. The Tigers went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position during Saturday’s game which is indicative of Detroit’s struggles to cash in on scoring opportunities. Chicago proved on Saturday that it can still win games without star rookie Munetaka Murakami, who landed on the injured list before this series with a hamstring injury. Edgar Quero, Colson Montgomery and Andrew Benintendi homered in Chicago’s big win while the bullpen combined for six scoreless innings after Anthony Kay pitched five shutout frames. Having multiple players heat up is important because the White Sox aren’t just relying on one power hitter to win games. To beat Detroit on Sunday, Chicago needs to get to Montero early. If Burke can match up with Montero by allowing five solid innings and the offense continues to provide timely power from Montgomery, Quero, Benintendi and Miguel Vargas, the White Sox have a better chance of sweeping this series at home.
