- Analysis
- Atlanta has the momentum coming into Sunday’s matchup. The Braves won the first two games of this series 8-3 on Friday and 5-2 on Saturday. Atlanta also became the first MLB team to get to 40 wins on the season. Ronald Acuna Jr. is getting red hot at the right time. He went deep twice on Saturday which gives him four home runs over his last three games.
Atlanta also matches up well with Cincinnati. The Braves have won four of their last five games while the Reds have lost three straight and are just 9-17 in May. That is a sizable gap in form between the two clubs and the Reds just cannot seem to find consistent pitching or late-game stability.
Atlanta may have another advantage in the starting pitching department. Spencer Strider is expected to start Game 3 which gives the Braves a power arm capable of missing bats and getting out of innings unscathed. That is key in a hitters park like Great American Ball Park. Cincinnati does have power in their lineup, but if Strider can limit free passes and keep the Reds from stacking baserunners, Atlanta can dictate play.
Plus, Cincinnati’s bullpen just got weaker after Graham Ashcraft was placed on the 60-day injured list due to a UCL sprain. Ashcraft had been valuable in relief this season posting a 3.33 ERA across 26 appearances, so his absence leaves the Reds shorthanded against a Braves offense that is getting hits throughout their lineup.
If Atlanta can strike first and continue to pressure Cincinnati’s pitching staff, the Braves have all the advantages to finish this series with a sweep.
