- Analysis
- After falling behind by as many as four runs Saturday, the Baltimore Orioles rallied against Toronto by winning 6-5. Pete Alonso provided the game-winning single after Baltimore exploded for five runs in the ninth inning. Wins like this can change the momentum of a series, especially at Camden Yards. Baltimore should feel confident going into Sunday after that late-game heroics.
Saturday revealed Toronto’s biggest weakness: bullpen consistency. Neither Jeff Hoffman nor Connor Seabold could finish the ballgame Saturday, and Toronto imploded in the ninth inning after holding a four-run lead. The bullpen struggle matters in this quick turnaround because Baltimore will go to the plate knowing they can win late even if they get down early against Toronto.
The Orioles have also some bats on fire. Coby Mayo has impressed Orioles fans with some incredible hits this month of May, and Baltimore’s power bats always gives it a chance to turn the game upside down in one swing. Baltimore just needs to manufacture traffic on base and force Toronto’s starter to throw some pitches, then let their bullpen go to war with Toronto’s shaky bullpen.
The Blue Jays hit well before Saturday’s explosion against Baltimore’s bullpen. If Toronto produces solid offensive numbers like it did before Saturday, Baltimore may have a long day. Despite Toronto having several MLB-caliber bats like Vladimir Guerrero Jr., I like Baltimore’s emotional momentum swinging into Sunday following Saturday’s win.
