- #929 SEATTLE with Hancock (+) over San Diego with Vasquez at 9:40 PM EST
Off last night's 4-1 road loss to the Friars, the M's will get back on track with a solid effort here. San Diego has just ripped off six consecutive wins and manager Craig Stammen and his men will run out of gas in this spot.
Hitting the hill for the visitors will be righty Emerson Hancock. Matched up against the 'Stros, Halos, and Guardians this season, No. 42 has allowed only four earned runs and 10 hits in 17.2 innings of work. Emerson whiffed 19 and walked three en route to a 2-1 record with a solid 2.04 ERA. Equally impressive, in a pair of starts against the Padres, Hancock has gone 9.2 innings combined and put together a sensational 1.86 ERA.
On the mound for the home team will be righty Randy Vasquez. In a trio of starts against the Rockies, Red Sox, and Tigers, No. 98 was zapped for two earned runs and 15 hits in 17.2 innings. Randy struck out 19 and walked four en route to a 1-0 record with a solid 1.02 ERA. Overall, with four years in the books, Vasquez has made 62 appearances (54 starts) and been clipped for 124 earned runs and 289 hits in 287.0 frames. That shakes down to a 13-16 tally with a 3.89 ERA.
There are a few angles that work against the hosts in this matchup. San Diego has slipped in 31 of its last 55 against American League foes. On the other side of the field, Seattle has tasted victory in 45 of its last 86 when coming off a loss and 30 of its last 57 when priced as an underdog.
The Mariners pitching staff is ranked second in ERA (3.02) and their elite arms will find a way to cool off this overachieving Padres bunch. Take Seattle with Hancock. Thanks, and best of luck, Tom.
