Analysis
The Mariners-Padres first five innings under on Wednesday has great setup behind starting pitching. Seattle will start Emerson Hancock, who is currently 2-1 with a 2.04 ERA and 0.74 WHIP across 17.2 innings pitched. San Diego sends Randy Vasquez to the mound against him, as he is sporting a 1.02 ERA over his own 17.2 innings. Neither starter has allowed much damage to this point and when both teams have starters pitching like that to start the season, it tends to lead to a quiet first few innings. Specifically with Hancock, Seattle has a legitimate chance to limit San Diego early because he has allowed only 10 hits, 3 walks and 1 home run across those 17.2 innings pitched. He has done an excellent job limiting traffic and bleeding innings on the rare occasions that he does allow baserunners. Vasquez has been just as reliable for San Diego thus far and was even named San Diego’s best starter through game 17 by Reuters. You like to see that kind of profile backing up your under bet. In addition to the pitching matchup, there is some game-flow that supports betting the under in this matchup. The opener between these two teams on Tuesday went final score 4-1 Padres, as Michael King pitched six strong innings allowing only one run while Seattle failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities. If that is any indication of how these lineups will perform against one another, it is far from a guarantee that they will see the ball well in this series. Petco Park also plays as a pitcher’s ballpark, so elite starting pitching should be able to keep both lineups off the board early. Taking a look at the whole setup here also lends itself to a well-played under bet. This game is being played at Petco Park in San Diego and the Padres are looking to continue their six-game winning streak during which they outscored opponents 40-15. There is no incentive for San Diego to push offense early in this game, instead they will look to rely on their hot hand in Vasquez and play small ball. All things considered, the combination of Hancock’s recent track record, Vásquez’s recent track record and the low scoring opener make the Mariners-Padres first five under one of the more attractive plays on the board for Wednesday.
