- Analysis
- The early angle with the best underlying case for Mets-Dodgers on Wednesday is the first five innings under. New York is handing the ball to Clay Holmes (2-1, 1.50 ERA), and Los Angeles counters with Shohei Ohtani (1-0, 0.00 ERA), who didn’t allow an earned run in his first 12 innings either. When you get two starters carrying numbers like they’re carrying here, and especially one in Holmes who has quietly been excellent and another in Ohtani who has been immediately dominant, the early-under angle makes a ton of sense.
Add into the mix a recent-form argument for low-scoring affairs, particularly from the Mets side. New York has lost seven in a row and scored only one run across the first two games of this series. I found on the Dodgers side noted LA starters have allowed six hits and one run over 15 2/3 innings total in this series. That’s exactly the kind of scoring trend you’re looking for backing up a first-five under.
Tuesday’s game also provided the blueprint for this wager quite clearly. Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Nolan McLean allowed a combined two runs through the first seven innings of their respective turns, and the game was never really out of reach at any point. Monday’s opener was controlled early as well, posting a final of 4-0. Pair Holmes’ 1.50 ERA and Ohtani’s still-spotless 0.00 entering Wednesday’s finale, and you have another game on your hands that should feature tough run-scoring in the first half.
Combine all of that and you get a first five innings under angle that checks a lot of boxes: excellent starting pitching, a Mets lineup that can’t buy a hit right now, and two straight games in this series that were low-scoring. That makes Wednesday’s opener between Mets and Dodgers a great candidate for the first five under.
