Analysis
Down 5-2 in the eighth inning, the Cardinals made an improbable comeback to beat the Guardians 6-5 in 10 innings last night. Cleveland had more hits in the game and a 13-4 edge in at-bats with runners in scoring position. The Cardinals got the two-out hit it needed to tie the game in the ninth inning as the Cleveland bullpen faltered, though the tying and go-ahead runs for St. Louis came with only one hit combined in the 9th and 10th innings. St. Louis used five relievers to close out the game after a marginal starting effort and four relievers threw at least 15 pitches for the Cardinals. Both bullpens have struggled this season, but the Guardians have much more potential at the plate Wednesday afternoon. Over the past five games Cleveland has scored 6.1 runs per nine vs. right-handers compared to just 4.0 for the Cardinals. St. Louis pitching has allowed at least five runs in six of the past eight games while Cleveland pitching has allowed three or fewer runs in four of the past seven games. Slade Cecconi is a promising young starter for the Guardians and while his 2026 numbers are mediocre in three starts, he was solid over 132 innings last season. He faced playoff contenders in his three starts this season and had decent strikeout results despite allowing three home runs in nearly 16 innings. Dustin May had great promise early in his career, but injuries have been a consistent issue. May no longer looks like the pitcher with the same potential at age 28. He struggled most of last season in his largest MLB workload season so far and the Cardinals have not been rewarded for their confidence in May as a regular starter in 2026. In three starts May has a 9.45 ERA even with two of three starts at home. He has had some tough luck on balls in play but allowing 21 hits in just over 13 innings if a great concern and he is generating groundballs at the lowest rate of his career so far in 2026. These teams are just a half-game apart in record at this early juncture of the season, but St. Louis is 15 runs worse in run differential and the preseason expectations for these teams were significantly far apart. The Guardians deserved to win yesterday and dominated on Monday as Cleveland should again have the advantage in this day game Wednesday to close out the series in St. Louis. Thank you for playing with Nelly’s and Best of Luck.
