Analysis
Charlotte has a 9-6 mark in AAC play including a nice win over North Texas this week. The 49ers have four road wins in conference play including solid wins at Tulane and at Temple, while only a loss at Memphis in early February really got away from Charlotte in a competitive AAC campaign. Charlotte plays at a very deliberate pace for Aaron Fearne and this year’s team has already improved by four wins over last season thanks to a big boost in offensive results, featuring an effective field goal rate nearly six percent stronger than last season. Florida Atlantic grades as the stronger team despite sitting below Charlotte in the AAC standings as FAU is just 8-8 in league play. The Owls looked like a contender with a 6-1 start that included wins over UAB, Memphis, and Wichita State. Since late January FAU is just 2-7 S/U and one of the wins came vs. UTSA at the bottom of the conference. On Thursday FAU managed to slip past Temple at home but the Owls have just two wins by more than 11 points in the entire AAC season and they both came in the first five games of the conference season. Injuries have been a factor in the decline and Devin Vanterpool has missed the past three games and Isaiah Elohim missed Thursday’s game. This is the only meeting of the season and while FAU has won seven of the past eight in this series S/U, Charlotte is 4-2 ATS in the past six including last year’s trip to Boca Raton and a competitive effort with a five-point loss in the AAC tournament last March in the season-ending game for the 49ers. Charlotte is one of the best shooting teams in the conference and while the defense hasn’t offered great resistance the 49ers can limit the possession count in this game to keep it close. FAU is also one of the AAC’s worst free throw shooting teams and one of the least experienced teams in the nation and winning close games has been an issue with five one-possession losses in AAC play.
